How to get in touch
Call us at 604-886-0004 or email info@suncoastlaw.ca. Tell us briefly what you need help with and we will arrange a time to meet.
Meetings take place at our office at 105 - 641 Mahan Road in Gibsons. You will find directions on the contact page. If you are coming from further up the Coast, let us know and we will do our best to find a time that suits your travel.
What to expect
A first meeting is a conversation, not a test. We start by listening. Tell us what has happened, what you are hoping to achieve and anything you are worried about.
We will ask questions to fill in the details, then explain your options in plain language. Before you leave, we agree on the next steps together: what we will do, what we need from you and how we will stay in touch.
Bring your questions. It helps to jot them down beforehand, so nothing gets forgotten once the conversation is under way. There is no such thing as a silly question.
Bring identification
Lawyers in British Columbia are required by the Law Society of BC to identify their clients, and in many matters to verify that identity with government-issued photo identification. To keep things simple, we ask every client to bring photo ID, whatever the matter.
Please bring valid government-issued photo identification, such as a driver’s licence, passport or BC Services Card. If more than one person will be signing documents, each person needs to bring their own identification.
Acting for a company, estate or another person?
If you are meeting with us on behalf of a company, an estate or someone else, bring the documents that show your authority to act, such as incorporation records, a will or a power of attorney. A power of attorney is a document in which one person gives another the authority to make decisions about their property and finances.
What to bring
Every matter is different, and you do not need everything on these lists to book a meeting. Bring what you have, and we will tell you if anything else is needed. If a document has already been sent to you by a real estate agent, lender, accountant or another party, bring a copy or forward it to us ahead of time.
Wills & Estates
For a will, power of attorney or representation agreement, or if you are dealing with the estate of someone who has died, it helps to have the following on hand. An executor is the person named in a will to carry out its instructions.
- A list of what you own and what you owe: property, accounts, investments, insurance, vehicles, loans and mortgages.
- The full names and addresses of the person or people you would like to act as executor.
- The full names of the people or organizations you would like to benefit from your estate, and what you would like each to receive.
- The names of anyone you would like to appoint as guardian of minor children.
- Any existing will, power of attorney or representation agreement, even if you plan to replace it.
- Family details: your spouse or partner, children, and any former relationships or dependants.
- If someone has died: the original will, if you have it, the death certificate, and a list of what the person owned and owed.

Real Estate
Whether you are buying, selling or refinancing, the paperwork usually starts before you meet with us. Bring whatever you have received so far.
- The contract of purchase and sale, with any addenda and subject-removal documents.
- Contact details for your real estate agent and for your mortgage broker or lender.
- Details of any existing mortgage on the property, including the lender and account information.
- Strata documents, if the property is a strata lot: the Form B information certificate, bylaws, minutes and any notices you have received.
- Your home insurance details, or the name of the insurer you plan to use.
- Your intended moving date, and the possession and completion dates in the contract.
A strata lot is a unit, such as a condominium or townhouse, in a development where owners share common property and are governed by a strata corporation.

After the meeting
Once we have met, you will know what happens next, what we will do and what we need from you. If we need more information, we will say exactly what and why.
If your circumstances change at any point, let us know. It is always easier to adjust early.
