What this policy covers

This policy covers this website only: the pages at suncoastlaw.ca and the contact form on the contact page.

It does not cover the information you share with us as a client. Lawyers in British Columbia owe their clients a duty of confidentiality, and communications between a lawyer and client can also be protected by solicitor-client privilege. In plain words: what you tell us in the course of legal work is protected by professional rules that go well beyond this website policy.

Information you send us

If you use the contact form, we ask for your name, your email address, the general topic of your enquiry (chosen from a short list) and your message. A phone number is optional.

We use this information to respond to you and to keep a record of your enquiry. We do not add you to a mailing list, and we do not sell or share your details with anyone for marketing.

When you submit the form, it is passed through an email-delivery service (currently Resend) and arrives in our office email. That service receives the details you enter in order to deliver them to us and handles them under its own privacy policy. If you would rather not use the form, you can always email or call us directly.

A note of caution: email and web forms are convenient, but they are not a secure channel for sensitive material. Please keep your first message general. We can arrange a better way to share confidential documents once we are in touch.

Information collected automatically

This website sets no cookies of its own and runs no analytics. We do not track which pages you visit or build a profile of you.

The site is hosted by Cloudflare. Like any hosting provider, Cloudflare may process your IP address and standard request logs (such as the page requested, the time, and your browser type) in order to deliver the site to you and to protect it from abuse. An IP address is the number that identifies your connection to the internet. Cloudflare may also set a small number of cookies used only to protect the site from automated abuse. Cloudflare handles this information under its own privacy policy.

Third-party services

Some parts of this site are provided by outside companies. When your browser requests them, those providers may receive your IP address and basic technical details about your device.

• Google Fonts supplies the typefaces used on every page.
• Google Maps provides the embedded map on our contact page. Google may set its own cookies in your browser when the map loads. You can avoid this by not visiting the contact page, or by blocking third-party cookies in your browser.
• Resend delivers contact-form messages to our office email.

These services are provided by their own operators and are subject to their own privacy policies. We do not control what those providers do with the information they receive.

How we protect it

The site is served over an encrypted connection (HTTPS), so what you type into the contact form is encrypted between your browser and our hosting provider. From there it travels to our office as ordinary email, which is why we ask you to keep a first message general. Messages from the form are received at our office and handled in the same careful way as any other enquiry to the firm.

No method of transmission over the internet is completely secure. We take reasonable steps to protect your information, but we cannot promise that a message will never be intercepted.

Retention

We keep messages sent through the contact form only as long as we need them to respond to you and to keep a record of the enquiry. If your enquiry becomes a client matter, the information becomes part of your file and is kept under the firm’s record-keeping obligations as a law practice.

Your rights under BC’s privacy law

In British Columbia, the Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA) sets the rules for how private organizations, including law firms, collect, use and disclose personal information. “Personal information” means information about an identifiable individual, such as your name, your personal email address and your phone number.

Under PIPA you can ask us:

• what personal information we hold about you, how we have used it, and who we have shared it with (an access request); and
• to correct personal information that is inaccurate or incomplete (a correction request).

To make either request, or to ask a question or raise a concern about how we handle personal information, contact the person responsible for privacy at the firm at info@suncoastlaw.ca or 604-886-0004. We will respond as PIPA requires. If you are not satisfied with our response, you may contact the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner for British Columbia.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time, for example if the website changes or if the law does. The current version will always be posted on this page with its effective date. Please check back if you want to see whether anything has changed.
